If you rent privately in Cardiff, your landlord or letting agent must usually protect a tenancy deposit in an approved scheme and give you the required information within 30 days. The approved schemes are Deposit Protection Service, MyDeposits and Tenancy Deposit Scheme; contact each scheme or check your paperwork to find out where the deposit is held. If it has not been protected, ask the landlord or agent in writing for an explanation and keep copies of your tenancy documents and messages. You may be able to take action through the courts, but the outcome depends on the circumstances, so consider advice from Shelter Cymru, Citizens Advice or a solicitor regulated by the SRA.
