A tenancy deposit protection scheme is separate from Universal Credit: it requires most landlords in England and Wales to protect your deposit with an approved scheme, rather than paying it for you. Universal Credit does not usually include a deposit payment, but you may be able to apply for a Budgeting Advance if you meet the eligibility rules. Your local council may also offer a rent deposit, bond or guarantee scheme, depending on its criteria. Check GOV.UK and your council’s housing team for current options and eligibility.
