In England and Wales, a landlord or agent must usually protect a qualifying tenancy deposit in a government-approved scheme within 30 days and give you the required information. When the tenancy ends, agree any proposed deductions, then request repayment through the scheme; the undisputed amount can normally be released while any disagreement is dealt with separately. If you cannot agree, you may be able to use the scheme’s free dispute-resolution service, or pursue the matter through the courts. Rules differ in Scotland and Northern Ireland, so check the relevant official guidance on GOV.UK or the devolved government website.
