Alongside booking the ceremony and giving notice, check how marriage may affect your wills, pensions, benefits, tax position, care costs and ownership of your home. Marriage can usually revoke an existing will unless it was made in contemplation of that marriage, so consider updating your wills with a solicitor. Tell pension providers, insurers and the relevant government departments about any change in circumstances, and check whether a partner could affect means-tested benefits or support with care fees. If you have significant assets or children from an earlier relationship, a solicitor can advise on a prenuptial agreement and other ways to record your wishes.
