Contact your chosen GP practice as soon as you can after your baby is born and ask about registering them as a new patient. The practice may ask for your baby’s name, date of birth, address and NHS number, if you have it, and may provide a registration form; requirements can vary across the UK. You should not generally need to wait for birth registration or provide immigration documents, but check with the practice if you are unsure. Your health visitor can also help, and the GP practice will usually arrange or explain the baby’s six-to-eight-week check.
