Eligible employees can usually take up to 52 weeks of Statutory Maternity Leave, although only some may qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay. You must normally tell your employer about your pregnancy and intended leave dates by the qualifying deadline, and at least two weeks of leave is compulsory after the birth (four weeks for some factory workers). You have the right to return to your job or a suitable alternative, and should not be treated unfairly or dismissed because of pregnancy or maternity leave. Rules can be detailed, so check the latest guidance on GOV.UK or speak to a solicitor regulated by the SRA if you think your rights have been breached.
